From Oct. 2002- June 2004. I worked at a Community Legal Aid Clinic as an Intake Worker. My position required me to screen calls and walk-in’s to find out if they meet the requirements to receive the clinic’s services. Sounds boring? Yup. Because of that. I had too much time on my hands. That time was spent exploring what I hoped to replace that job with. It was the first full-time contract I ever had. It was also the first time I had a health plan. Since high school I contemplated a career in Massage Therapy. I guess that came about because during my competitive swimming years we often had to massage each other after a practice. I was the one that was most sought after. My massages got talk. When you’re good at something you contemplate it as a career. But it was only contemplation and I never did go through with the intense (and expensive) schooling for it. When I finally had a health plan. I got my first massage from an actual therapist. She was a referral and we instantly became friends because I asked grueling questions about each move she was making. She got a refresher course each time I went to her and I got to learn about her career. Meanwhile my long weeks at the Legal Clinic were longer and longer. I was on the internet a lot often reading about nutrition and different exercises I could do at the gym after work. I would bicycle 25 minutes back and forth to work and loved it. until I got to work. I’d spend the entire hour long lunch break outside walking along the beach or Gerrard East. I really put thought into my physical training at the gym everyday. It was a year into the contract that I realized three years of schooling for Massage Therapy was a bit much at that point in my life but I already had the background for Personal Training. The last six months of my contract I spent getting certified and reading everything I could about anatomy physiology and coaching theory. I had already spent my whole life working out coaching swimming eating healthy and experimenting with different types of healthy cooking dishes. It was only natural that I'm in the career I am today. I can’t say that I don’t think or wonder what my life would be like if I had gone to study massage therapy. I always can go when I really desire it. For now. I’m thankful that I got to experience and leave an unsatisfying job to discover what I love to do. So many people work at jobs that don’t satisfy them. There is a world of opportunity out there and not impossible to grasp.
