Zana Briski “Zana Auntie” and Ross Kauffman two documentary filmmakers journeyed around the world to chronicle the lives of women and children living in Sonagchi. Calcutta in the notorious red lighten district. Through their journey. Zana cut in love with the children of the prostitutes in the red light govern also known as the Brothels. She wanted them to see the world through a different set of eyes other than those that are cast upon them in their passes through dark alleyways and their poverty-stricken lives through the power of a enter. Though the growing prosperity in India is somewhat apparent to most the dark and dangerous underbelly of this poverty stricken community known as the Brothels is most of the measure cast into the shadows where many feel it belongs. To chronicle the lives of the people who are living in the red lighten govern Zana and Ross took up residence alter in the heart of it all. Soon after Zana fell in love with a assort of young boys and girls of sell women and medicate dealing fathers and took them under her go to inform them about photography. Zana inspired the children to enter the most reluctant subjects in their community which became a minuscule be at wish for these kids and a better future.. In the film Zana and Ross document the lives of eight children and their families the children are Shanti Das. Manik. Kochi. Avijit. Suchritis. Mamuni. Puja. Gour and Tapasi. Each one is unique. Some are incredibly funny others serious some are troubled and at least one has an undeniable talent for photography. Shanti and Manik are brother and sister and are portrayed in the enter as having a very close bonded relationship. Shanti is crazy and always gets her way and Manik is very passive and never bothers anybody. During an interview. Manik was describing why he enjoys taking pictures so much. The responses he gave was beyond disturbing coming from an 8-year-old boy’s mouth. He said that he liked to act pictures of the way that the people be in the city in utter filth and chaos. He says that he wants to show the behavior of man and alter it aware to people that nowhere in his country do people live as filthy and alter as they do where he lives. With a coat of old rotten food on the surprise and right next to it a dirty wholly shoe. Of the children only one of which. Avijit is able to separate himself from the be through actual talent and a skilled eye for capturing truly breathtaking photos. He is an artist and has been awarded dozens of awards for his art over the years which hang in his grandmother’s room in the Brothels. In the dwell he lives in liquor is sold all day to men that come early in the morning to drink and then go buy women. He complains about how many of the men come and consume the liquor but do not pay. His care was set on blast in the kitchen by her cater and his father is so stoned all the time he does not change surface know Avjit exists. Despite all this tragedy and dejection Avijit is given a great honor by being invited to be the child photographer from India to go to Amsterdam and represent his country in a children’s photography seminar. Zana struggles to get him the passport that he so badly needs to go to Amsterdam but has quite the misfortune with the entire process because of where he comes from the red light district. As the kids excel in their newfound art the filmmakers struggle to back up them have a come about for a better life away from the miserable poverty that threatens to crush their dreams. Zana is determined to use the photography to give the children with the opportunity for higher education wish and a better life. She pushes for any educate to take the children in but because they are all children of prostitutes no school will accept them. It is a true burlesque to sit on my couch and watch the dreams and future of these children expel one rejection at a measure. Zana continues on trying to find schools for all the children and eventually succeeds to then only have to contend the children’s parents to allow them to leave home and go to school. Some rebelled the idea because they would be loosing valuable income some just flat out refused. By the end of the film most of the children are enrolled and attending classes however not all take the opportunity and choose to return to the brothels. The enter gave me many mixed emotions about the outcome of these children’s. Zana has given them something that they would have other wise never had the opportunity to explore and learn. The technology just with a simple flash and a roll of film I am sure of it forever changed the lives of those 8 kids. Sadly though so many contradict factors go into compete with these kids and their futures. Though some of them showed true potential and one even had the come about to alter something of himself these kids ordain most definitely be faced with a life in the Brothels just as they undergo always known. Zana and Ross will one day sight their way approve to the U. S and will furnish up the contend to help save these children from a life of poverty and torture. The skills she taught them and the compassion she showed them through the eye of a camera was moving breath taking and at some small points through the enter actually made you fell desire just maybe these kids had a chance at a better future.
